Guitar Greats: Slash

This article provides information about a guitar great: Slash. Providing a short history of his achievements and outlining some of the best songs and albums that Slash as helped to create.

This article is the first in a series about guitar greats, and the featured artist this time is Slash. Slash was born in West Hempstead in West London but grew up in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He was given the name was Saul Hudson. When he was 11 years old, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, where he was given the nickname 'slash' by a family friend.

Guns N' Roses

In 1983, Slash formed the band Road Crew, with future Guns N' Roses musician, Steven Adler. He later played with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in the band Hollywood Roses, after leaving to form another band, Slash and Steven Adler were invited to join Guns N' Roses.

It was Guns N' Roses where Slash enjoyed his first commercial success, the band Guns N' Roses went on to become a multi million selling rock band. Due to his constant musical differences with Axl Rose, some of Slash's material was unused and he used this to form the side project, Slash's Snakepit.

After Guns N' Roses

After the success of Guns N' Roses and Slash's subsequent departure in 1996, Slash was an in demand session musician, working with greats such as Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles amongst others.

Having played with some of the other ex-Guns N' Roses members, it was obvious that there was still a chemistry and the formed the Velvet Revolver. Izzy Stradlin left and was replaced by Dave Kushner. Having joined the group in 2003, Scott Weiland officially split from the group in 2008, leaving behind 2 critically acclaimed albums and 2 world tours that re-established the band, and Slash, as international performers.

Slash has continued a feud with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, this feud is often aired publicly and it is clear that Slash will not be joining up with Guns N' Roses any time in the near future. Arguably, Guns N' Roses had 2 frontmen in the band in the form of the singer Axl Rose and the lead guitar player, Slash. Since Slash's departure from the band, Guns N' Roses has been in decline ever since, no longer the international rock gods they once were.

Guitars and Equipment

A Gibson 1959 Les Paul Copy is one of Slash's favorite guitar and has been used on every album since the beginning of Guns N' Roses. As a result, Slash now has a number of Gibson signature guitars available. He only uses Marshall amps when playing live although he has been known to use VOX AC30s and small fender amps. Whilst he has a collection of over 100 guitars, it would seem that his Les Paul copy is the most widely used on his recordings and live performances.

Awards and Achievements

Slash has won many best guitarist prizes and was even added to Rock and Rolls hall of fame in 1997, alongside some of the greatest guitar players ever known. In August 2009, Slash was voted the Time Magazine's 2nd greatest guitar player all time.

Best Works

Slash has been partly responsible for some of greatest songs ever written, including: Sweet Child o' Mine, Paradise City, November Rain, Welcome to the Jungle and Slither. Guns N' Roses debut album 'Appetite for Destruction' is still considered to be one of the greatest rock albums written. The opening of Sweet Child o' Mine is just as recognizable today as it was when it was written over 20 years ago.
