Music Records: The Difference Between Albums, Mixtapes, and EP's

Recording artist make different types of bodies of music and the three major different Albums, Mixtapes, and EP's. They each vary in why they are recorded by a musician and the reasons why the are releases.

Being a big fan of music, I make it my responsibility to be aware when one of my favorite rappers or singers release a new musical project. Often times in today's era, the body of music that a musician produces varies depending on the genre, length, and the level of formality that the project is intended for. Music albums, mixtapes, and EP's are the three major types of music records made and each serve different purposes by the recording artist, record label, and for their fans.

Out of the three, music Albums are the most formal and proffesional music projects that a musician will ever record. Albums are composed of the best music that a musician has made. These projects are sold in stores nationwide and the musicican often promotes their album on radios, television, and in any media outlet to sell more records. They are mainstream and most critics use these projects to rate a recording artist. Albums are traditionally done by one musician, but it has become more common for albums to be “collaborated” on by more than one singer; in some cases albums may consist of the entire work of a record label to boost the talent of the attached artists.

The mixtape is a music piece that is exclusively founded by rappers. Today, it is common for many R&B artists to release mixtapes demonstrating their rapping abilities. Mixtapes are made for different reasons depending on the musical status of the artist. Many rappers make mixtapes to gain popularity appeal and to show off their rapping prowess. On a similar note, it is common for rappers to release mixtapes to satisfy their patient fans after a long music production drought. Few mixtapes are rarely ever sold in stores; rather posted online for free download. Many local artists and record labels will even give out their latest mixtape to local malls, gas stations, and social events.

Famous rapper Lil Wayne released a mixtape called Sorry for the Wait on June 13, 2011 to pacify waiting fans for his highly anticipated album The Carter IV, which is scheduled for release on August 29, 2011.

EP's are the most shortest music records out of albums and mixtapes. EP stands for extended play and they contain more music than one single but are too short to qualify as an album. EP's count as music records because they give a taste of what the artist is crafting for the future. Today, an EP will consist of about 5-8 songs. Rarely are EP's sold in stores.
