A list of the top 10 bollywood viral songs. Music is a very important aspect of Indian movies. The songs have been from recent movies, released anytime between 2010 and 2012. The list is based on the number of YouTube views that a particular video of the song has received. Each one of them has more than 5,000,000 views.
Music is an extremely important aspect of Indian films. A regular Bollywood (Indian counterpart of the Hollywood) masala movie is incomplete without at least one peppy dance number, a romantic love song, and a heart wrenching sad song.
The change of the decade ushered in a new era for Indian films, and more so, for Indian music. Fortunes were turned instantaneously within the Indian music industry, and fates were sealed almost as soon as a song was launched. The last few years were extremely fruitful for Indian composers and artists alike, for some songs went in to shatter records worldwide. We got to see some major hits resulting from domestic talents, as well as International collaborations with some of the best known artists worldwide.
In this article, I will be listing the songs that were declared as huge hits and are being played and loved by the masses even today. Some of you may like all of these songs; some may not like some of the songs; while others may not like any of these songs, but the fact remains that these are massive hits, and hence, can be declared as Viral songs!
A few important points before we get started:
1. YouTube Views: YouTube plays a major part in the popularity of many songs. Hence, this list is based purely on the number of YouTube views the song has received. Some other statistics (like the number of Radio plays, or some music chart's statistics) may have a different opinion, but YouTube says this.
Also, only the maximum number of views that any video of the song ( it can be the official music video of the song, or some fan-made one) has received, on the very first page of the search results have been considered.
2. Yardstick: Many songs have become popular since the last few years, and hence, many of them have received 3 million plus views. So, many of the songs had made it to the list earlier.
To sort them out, the yardstick had been selected as 5 million views. Fortunately, only 10 of them made it here.
3. To make the list as relevant as possible, only songs from those movies have been selected, which were released any time between 2010 and 2012. So, if your favorite (extremely popular) song is not there on the list, chances are, the movie was released before/after this list was made.
4. The results are subject to variations, as the number of YouTube views are can change constantly.
So, with all said and done, let the countdown begin!

No. Of YouTube Views: 5,968,660
Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty
Singer: Neeraj Shridar, Amrita Kak
Picturized on: Salman Khan, Zarine Khan
What Made This Song a Hit: In India, it is a popular belief that Shah Rukh Khan reigns over Bollywood, and whatever he does becomes a hit. But I would beg to differ! Salman Khan is the all supreme Khan of Bollywood, and whatever he does becomes a landmark for generations to come.
He can get away with cheesy dialogues and a simple storyline, and still, the movie could be making millions in no time!
This song is picturized, spoofing some of the old Indian classics. With an extremely catchy tune, and an equally interesting set of lyrics, this song continues to be played in radios, T.V.s, and all other music playing devices possible, till date.
9. Song Name: Munni Badnaam Hui

Singer: Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya Nigam
Picturized on: Malaika Arora Khan, Salman Khan, Sonu Sood
Why this Song Became So Popular: This song, picturized on the Chamma Chamma girl, Malaika Arora Khan, was one of the best selling songs of 2010. A peppy item number, this song makes it because of Malaika's awesome moves, combined with some classy folk singing by Mamta Sharma.
Again, Salman Khan's fan following has a major part in this song's popularity. Even though he makes an appearance towards the end of the video, his clumsy, but really funny moves doesn't fail to impress the masses, one bit!

No. Of YouTube Views: 6,736,857
Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar
Singer: Mohit Chauhan, Shekhar Ravjiani, Shruti Pathak

Why is this a Chart Topper: Even though this movie failed to impress the audience, the music certainly connected with them. The music composer duo of Vishal - Shekhar are known for their new age music style, and their ability to connect with the youth.
This song, sung by the maestro - Mohit Chauhan, is a soul touching sad song, about love and loss. A very sad and melodious one, this song has at least a 100 different fan-made covers of it on YouTube!

Why Does this Song Stand Out: In India, Emraan Hashmi is considered very lucky because, even if his movie doesn't work, it's music turns out to be a massive success. But for Murder 2, both the movie and it's music, were a huge hit!
Coming as the sequel to the crime/thriller Murder, this movie had a range of extremely hit songs. Phir Mohabbat is a sad song, about a guy who goes out to find love again in his life. With an extremely soft and soothing melody, this song is popular for the usage of strings, and it's heart breaking lyrical work.

Why it this Hot: If every person who posted this song had a dollar for every view he/she received on YouTube, believe me, at least 10 different people would've been millionaires!
This song has many advantages over the others, the biggest one is probably the fact that it was able to grip the domestic as well as the International audience. It was sung by, the one and only, R&B sensation - Akon. At first, people weren't ready to believe that it was him, because it sounded so perfect (He has sung it totally without the American accent).
Picturized on the ever-so-gorgeous Kareena Kapoor, and the King of Hearts - Shah Rukh Khan, the music, is a mix of south Indian folk, mixed with a zest of Bollywood R&B!
Halfway Through: So now, we are halfway through our list, and the competition gets tougher. It is now about the best of the best; of the songs, that will be played for years to come.
Without wasting much time, let us get to it!
5. Song Name: Chikni Chameli
No. Of YouTube Views: 9,969,492
Music Director: Ajay - Atul
Singer: Shreya Ghoshal
Picturized on: Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt
Why is this One a Blockbuster: This song was supposed to be in the 6th spot, but as this list was being made, it left one of it's toughest competitors behind! Also, this song could have been declared a massive hit within the first few seconds that it was aired on T.V.s, radios and online.
Based on one of the hugest Marathi (native of Maharashtra) hit folk songs - Kombadi Palali, this song makes it because of the K - factor, i.e. the Katrina Factor. As we'll see later down the list, the impact that the stunning Katrina Kaif can have on a music video, this song is popular for some amazing Marathi style dance moves by Katrina, and the music of Kombadi Palali, that you cannot ever get it out of your heads!
4. Song Name: Dhinka Chika
No. Of YouTube Views: 12,108,854
Music Director: Devi Sri Prasad (Original Composer of the Telugu super hit - Ringa Ringa)
Singer: Mika Singh, Amrita Kak
Picturized on: Salman Khan, Asin
Why Does this Song Remain in the Hearts: This song, again has two advantages: It has Salman Khan in it, and secondly, the original song - Ringa Ringa (Telugu - native of Andhra Pradesh) was a super massive hit.
With extremely catchy lyrics, and simple, but yet again, a catchy style of dancing (which was rumored to be choreographed by Salman Khan himself), this song remains to be a hit among dancing enthusiasts for the beats.
3. Song Name: Sheila Ki Jawani
Movie: Tees Maar Khan
No. Of YouTube Views: 16,152,350
Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar
Singer: Vishal Dadlani, Sunidhi Chauhan
Picturized on: Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar
Why is this one a Smash Hit: This video for this song was one of the most awaited ones of 2010 since some Paparazzi photos were leaked in newspapers and online.
This song is viral because of, again, the sexy Katrina Kaif. This item number remains a milestone for item numbers, and it is still popular, even after 2 years it's release! It has some seriously sultry moves by Katrina Kaif, and her belly dancing gig, which adds another dimension to the video, plays one of the most important part to this song's popularity.
2. Song Name: Teri Meri
No. Of YouTube Views: 25,530,129
Music Director: Himesh Reshammiya
Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shreya Ghoshal
Picturized on: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor
Why does This Song Touch Souls: This song was probably the most unexpected entry into the list. It has been sung by the Ore Piya sensation, the sufi maestro - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
A sad song, with a soulful melody, this song is rumored to be the brainchild of Salman Kham himself. It has an upper hand on the lyrical part too, as it is about a guy who cannot be with the girl of his choice. It connects directly with the miseries of millions, and hence, makes it into the second spot.
It is Time For the No.1 Song: We have almost completed our list, and are waiting for the No. 1 song. This song isn't exactly a Bollywood song, but has been accepted by the world as if it were one.
Breaking all records and topping all possible charts, you can hear this song being played in every possible music playing device in India. The inspiration behind this list, this song has been embedded into the minds and souls of music lovers. It has so many different versions of it on YouTube (Female version, Kid version, Punjabi version, Swedish version, Egyptian Arabic version and even an Exam version!) that you'll be tired of counting them.
So, the number one spot goes to . . .
1. Song Name: Why This Kolaveri Di
Movie: 3 (Tamil movie)
No. Of YouTube Views: A staggering 42,217,868
Music Director: Anirudh Ravichander
Picturized on: Dhanush, Anirudh, Shriti Haasan, Aishwarya Rajnikanth
'Viral' doesn't even come close: To find this song, either on YouTube or Google, all you have to type in is "Why", and you'll be there! This song, set in south Indian classical folk style, is played using an array of different musical instruments.
The song received all the recognition and the accolades, probably for it's lyrics, and more so, for Dhanush's singing style (That's how he has become a household name in India). It combines a (deliberately done) clumsy form of English, with lyrics that are a cross between Tamil (native of Tamil Nadu) and English. Also, the lyrics are about how a guy falls in love with a girl, and then faces so much more than what he bargained for! It adds another element to the song's humor, and makes it all the more funnier.
People connected well with it, for this song was a simple one. It brought together the southern part of India, with the North, by removing the language barrier. Then, the "Why This Kolaveri Di" phenomenon started spreading across different parts of the world, and the rest, it history!!!
So we have reached our conclusion, and "Why This Kolaveri Di" is the most Viral song in recent Indian history. This list has been nothing short of unexpected, for so many songs were left out. For instance, I expected at least 1 song from the movie "Rockstar" to make it to the list, as all of them were brilliant.
Again, "Mere Bina" from "Crook" should've been here, as it is one of the most popular love songs. But yet, I guess the ones that made here deserved it!
*I would like to thank a range of different websites for the information gathered, but it won't be possible. Wikipedia, YouTube, and lyricsmint are a few of the major ones. So, to thank all of them, it would be fair enough to thank Google.
